My paintings are many layers of life and death, love and
loss. They are fragments of our human condition, with inevitable discoveries of
who I am or who I want to become. I believe they are also universal stories,
for we all have memories, and as time waits for no one we crave reflection. Life
is fast and we all need to reflect, be mindful and look and listen. They are
pieces in which I see new things with every viewing, offering up hidden layers.
I have lived with some of these paintings for long stretches of time and I
encounter different sensations from them as I change and grow, but they are
nevertheless always in harmony with beauty. I of course strive for craftsmanship
while encouraging immediacy, therefore it is always a push and pull between the
two. I rarely know exactly where I'm going with each piece when I start, but in
the end I know when each one is finished. If it is beautiful, I am happy, for
that is what matters most. It's never work for me, I cannot not paint, and so
it is with a natural flow that I descend into my studio to discover rather than
to control. Every piece is different, but the same. You cannot have life
without death, death without life and you cannot have life without art; for art
is life.
