Tristan Govignon
Tristan Govignon is a prolific artist who works in a wide range of media, creating nonobjective sculpture in bronze, steel, stainless and aluminum. He also creates energetic paintings in oil and encaustic, layering and fusing the materials to achieve powerful compositions of color in space. The varying media allows Govignon to interpret, discuss, and represent contemporary life while re-examining classic and contemporary art-making methods.
Beyond studio forms and gallery exhibitions, Govignon explores and expresses his creative vision through private commissions with interior designers, consulting with architectural design firms, and installations for corporate and public environments.
Govignon is influenced by the ever changing world environment that surrounds us all. Politics, global climate changes, and present-day relationships inspire him to interpret these moments of chaos and structure them into beauty.
He received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Arizona, and has also studied at Tulane University of New Orleans, L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, and the Massachusetts College of Art. Govignon has taught at the Brookline Arts Center and was an adjunct faculty member at Massachusetts College of Art for several years. He was the painting tutor at Lowell House at Harvard University 2005 and also created installations as an artist in residence at Harvard University in previous years.
Tristan Govignon was featured on ABC’s
Chronicle in 2004 and 2005. Also in 2005, Govignon won a juried competition in
print for his bronze sculpture, Diva, from American Art Collector. The Judi
Rotenberg Gallery, LLC presented his solo show, Spirit in Form in 2004. In 2001,
Govignon received a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant for paintings created
while touring Germany. Past work include commissions to create kinetic sculpture
for the City of Boston’s Parks Department. In 2003, Govignon was the artistic
designer for the overall park design and gateway for Ryan Playground in
Dorchester, MA. Thanks to additional funding from the Browne Fund, Govignon
created painted tile work with the community children for the park’s splash
pool. Also in 2003, he created a dynamic sculpture for the PTC International
Headquarter’s collaboration center. Govignon continues to work full time in his
Boston South End studio.
