Avis Turner
I have always been drawn to the use of the human figure as a means of expression.
My trainings under Mark Oxman and many others was classical-working from the model.
Early on I was very moved by smooth seamless contours of Egyptian sculpture and the delicate beauty of the Greek Archaic.
The standing frontal poses and inner quitetude of those works became my first influences. My work reflects my continued interest in the female archetype as an image.
Beyond that, I continue to be inspired by African and Asian sculpture as well as the European sculptors (Michelangelo, Marini, Manzu, Rodin etc.).
The winged figures emerged some time before I read Rainer Maria Rilke's poetry. Most likely they were germinated by the winged Nike figures of acient Greece.
But it was amongst commentary on Rilke's poetry that I found words for these strange beings.
"Raume aus Wesen" or spaces of being- something above human but beneath the Gods. Angels, Bodhisattvas, ...a consciousness.
What D.H. Lawrence described and Wordsworth called, "unknown models of being."
