Elling Reitan
Elling Reitan was nominated as ”Nobel Peace Price Artist” in 2000 and is currently considered one of the leading contemporary artists in Norway. Reitan has found his expression in a combination of abstract and representational imagery with surrealist notes, marking the return to the mystical, mythical and sacred dimension of art.
In Reitan's view, our time is characterized by a permanent struggle for profit and continuous stream of information, both preventing the individual from developing personal thoughts and attitudes. His painting is an invitation to stop the race for a moment and create a personal vision, apart from the corporate one. His source of inspiration and theme choices often come from dream and fantasy life. The painter's universe is populated by Madonna-like women (presented in more than one dimension – a holy figure with an ambiguous expression that undermines the sacred symbol), angels and biblical figures as well as by themes of the Greek mythology (muses, the Pegasus). The dreamlike landscapes have burning red skies, emerald green fields and cobalt blue rivers; here, several realities intermingle and a new allegorical world comes into being.
