Thomas Barber
"My work has been called transformative, in that transforms the person viewing it by enhancing their perceptions.
My personal transformation began in New York City on July 24, 1946.
After several family moves and graduation from high school in North Carolina in 1964, a trip to Massachusetts put me in the Art Institute of Boston.
In 1968 a letter from the government informed me that my presence was requested for the Vietnam War.
I enlisted in the army and served in Germany as a medical corpsman.
I was introduced to many different aspects of man's behavior towards, and treatment of, one another.
After discharge in 1971 I headed down to Switzerland and climbed the Matterhorn.
After three years in the Army it was much needed and soul liberating experience.
Europe also proved to be an inspirational gem, greatly enhancing my connections with Middle Ages.
After returning to the United States in 1970s I had become a recognized illustrator of science fiction and fantasy magazines and book covers.
At the New England Science Fiction Convention in 1976 I was honored with the Best Professional Artist of the Year Award.
I the 1980 my personal quest took me out west. I settled in Jerome, back then, a ghost town in the mountains of Arizona.
Captivated by the desert I painted there for several years. The spirit of the southwest will remain with me forever.
I continued to travel and live in various western states before returning to New England in 1999.
Those years of travel and spiritual seeking have led to the visions which are now finding their way onto canvas.
My work has been displayed in galleries from coast to coast and is in private collections world-wide."
